Watch Group
Each Block Captain in the Neighborhood Watch
Program is responsible for one of the 40 zones in the
development. Stone Lakes families, thank you for informing
your Block Captain
of any suspicious or unusual situations in the area close to
your home.
Click
here for a printable Summary of Neighborhood Watch Information.
We need a few MORE BLOCK
CAPTAINS for complete coverage of the development. Please get involved in this program! It is
important for all of us to watch out for each other and for our
common property. Email watchgroup@stonelakes.net
if you're interested.
Be sure to keep your vehicles LOCKED and your garage doors
CLOSED. Keep valuables out of sight. To report an incident to the Southlake Police, please call 911
for an emergency, (817) 743-4524 for the non-emergency
dispatch desk, or (817) 748-8149 for 'after the fact' incidents. Be prepared to give your name, address,
phone number, and a detailed description of the incident, people
involved, vehicles, and license plates if applicable. Take
a quick photo with your cell phone if you can! If you
have reported an incident, email watchgroup@stonelakes.net so
we can get the word out to your neighbors as well.
When planning a vacation, you can fax a
Vacation Housewatch Form
to the police at (817) 748-8158. When
Southlake DPS receives it, a member of the agency will contact
you to verify the information on your form and to give you a
security number. When you return, notify the DPS
Communications Division at (817) 748-8150, so that your house
watch can be cancelled. Arrange for
your mail to be held at the Post Office or to be picked up by a
neighbor. Stop the newspaper delivery, and be sure to have
a neighbor stop by daily to remove all ads and notices left on
your front door.
The Southlake DPS divides the city into 4
districts; Stone Lakes is in District 3.
See Map Here.
Operation ID
Mark your valuables with your Texas driver's license number, and
keep a list of your possessions to aid the police
or insurer in the recovery or replacement process should
anything happen to them. You can borrow an engraving tool
from the police department for a period of one week. Call
DPS Corporal Mike Bedrich to arrange use of the engraver:
817-748-8137. The police will provide you with a sticker
for your front window to notify potential trespassers that your belongings
are marked.
A convenient method of storing
proof of ownership is to take digital photos of your belongings
and put them on a CD. Take a picture of your digital
camera too by aiming at a mirror! Make a second copy of
the CD: keep one in your home and another in a safety deposit box or at a relative's
home.
Southlake Police also offer free Home
Security Surveys
to discuss locks, burglary prevention tips, and info on security
lighting and alarms. In some cases, the homeowner qualifies for
a reduction in their insurance premium after the survey. You
can schedule a home survey by calling 817-748-8137.

Speeding on Our Streets
Reminder: the SPEED LIMIT is 30 mph in Stone Lakes, but
vehicles need to go more slowly near children. Southlake
Police are increasing patrols through the development; speeders
will be fined.
Keep
our children safe! REPORT SPEEDING CARS to
watchgroup@stonelakes.net
Send
any info you can to us, for example: the car's make, model, color, license plate,
bumper stickers, street, day, time, if it had tinted windows or
a roof rack, and driver description. If you note the address where the car stopped, the Neighborhood
Watch Group will contact the owner of the property to make them
aware of the situation. Habitual offenders will be
reported to the police.
To report any aggressive or dangerous drivers to the
Department of Public Safety (police), take down the license
plate number and other identifying information, then please call
817-481-2868.

Weekly Police
Report
The Southlake Police send out a
weekly update that lists incidents, arrests, and safety tips for
the community. If you would like to receive this weekly
report, email
mbedrich@ci.southlake.tx.us
and ask to be added. The report lists
incidents by district. The Southlake DPS divides the city into 4
districts; Stone Lakes is in District 3.

Emergency Training Available
The CERT Program trains citizens to
respond to large-scale emergencies in the community. To
train to become a member of the Citizens Emergency Response
Team (CERT), email the Volunteer Sponsor Anne Wise at
awise@wiseacres.com .
You can also click below to review the many situations when CERT
training can be VERY helpful:

Southlake has an ALERT RADIO STATION, 790
AM. Program this station on one of your pre-set buttons on
your car stereo: 790 AM. This non-commercial
station broadcasts emergency and community information, weather
warnings and forecasts, and information about various community
events. For additional info about emergency and disaster
preparedness, contact Ross Korkmas at the DPS: (817) 748-8624 or
email him here.

Magazine
Salespeople
In early
January 2009, at least one resident had a bad experience with a
magazine salesperson. Please remember, ALL solicitors must
display a current City of Southlake Solicitor's Permit before
approaching your door. Also, if you have a NO SOLICITING
sticker displayed by the front door (available for free from
watchgroup@stonelakes.net ), people are not allowed to even
make contact with you at your door to sell you anything.
If you have a bad experience with a solicitor, especially if you
have a No Soliciting sticker on display, feel free to report it
to the Police at 817-748-8349 so they can enforce the
solicitation ordinances.
Children Our Watchgroup
has obtained Identi-Kid
Kits from the Southlake Police. These kits enable parents
to keep their child's fingerprints, photos, locks of hair, and
other identifying info in one place for quick access should the
child ever become lost.
Email us if you want one or more Identi-Kid Kits.
We also want to protect kids by offering free
gun locks from the Southlake Police Department.
If you
have firearms in your home, be sure to store them unloaded,
locked, and with the ammunition locked in a separate
place.
Email us if you want a free gun lock.
Kids, if you want the attention of someone
driving by, wave to them; do NOT go into the street and chase
the car. If you want customers for your business (such as
a lemonade stand), stay on the sidewalk and hold up a sign; do
NOT approach moving cars to ask for business. Parents,
please remind your kids about the danger of 'pedestrian vs.
vehicle' encounters!
Parents, for your children's safety, be sure
your young children are supervised outside, particularly near
the lake, playground and pool. For the well-being of your
older kids, remind them not to roam around outside at
night. Remember the old saying, "It's 10 o'clock. Do
you know where your children are?" It makes
sense.
Pool owners, LOCK THE GATES to your pool at
all times! Prevent young children from wandering in and
drowning in an unsupervised, unlocked pool area.
CLICK for pool safety tips from Southlake DPS - Fire
Department.
Some children leave their appealing bikes, scooters, and
skateboards on the sidewalk, driveway, or front lawn
overnight. To ensure the safety of these items, please
secure them in the garage or other appropriate place.

Teens
Parents, remind your teenage drivers often
about the need to proceed SLOWLY through the neighborhood.
Drivers cannot count on children to make careful choices with
traffic; the driver MUST use extra caution to prevent accidents.
The Southlake police department has a free,
confidential parental
assistance program geared toward parents of teens. Click
here for more info:

Animals
On occasion, wild coyotes roam the
neighborhood, mostly in yards near the lake and creeks. Do not allow
your cats or small dogs (under 35 pounds) to wander unattended,
especially from dusk through dawn, lest they succumb to a hungry
coyote's attack.
Pets are a wonderful addition to many families here in Stone
Lakes. Let's all remember to keep them on a leash when
outdoors, and to pick up after them. This includes
cats as
well as dogs. This is the City of Southlake's
ordinance, and residents of Stone Lakes must follow it.
If you see a stray
animal and need help with it, call Animal Control at
817-743-4524.
Sometimes there are poisonous water moccasins in and
near the lake, so use caution. Poisonous snakes often have
somewhat triangular heads and long, vertical pupils; whereas
non-venomous snakes usually have round pupils.

Safety Alerts
One morning in Stone Lakes, a teenage driver ignored a school bus while its lights were
flashing and stop sign was out. She drove right past the
bus, despite it being illegal and very dangerous. Children
assume it is SAFE to cross the street when the bus is stopped
and the lights are flashing. There is NOWHERE so important
to be that it justifies putting innocent lives in danger.
Leave a few minutes earlier to allow for traffic and school bus
delays, then you won't be in a rush on the roads.
On the other hand, KIDS must be careful when
crossing the street. Parents, please emphasize to your
kids that they MUST look both ways before running or biking or
skating or skateboarding into a street! Younger children
should be SUPERVISED closely by their parents when outside.
They have not yet learned proper judgment about traffic safety.
Several neighborhood children of various ages have been seen
darting into the street without looking. Fortunately, the
drivers so far have reacted quickly enough to avert a
disaster. Please teach your kids to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN
before entering a street! Lastly, put
that cell phone away for driving! A phone conversation is
too distracting for even the most experienced driver; using a
phone while behind the wheel puts you at risk, puts other
drivers and passengers at risk, puts pedestrians at risk, puts
parked vehicles at risk, puts mailboxes at risk... get the
picture? Pull over if you need to call someone. Let
voicemail take an incoming call. Solicitors
Many people approach our front doors to solicit sales of
various products and services. Be on the lookout for the
official City of Southlake Solicitor's Permit, which MUST be
prominently displayed by each vendor. It looks like an ID
card, and is processed by our local police department after
background checks are completed on the individual.
Parents, please remind your children NOT to open the door for
strangers. Have a question about a solicitor's
permit? Call Ramon Fullerton at the DPS: 817-748-8117.
Would you like to see what it looks like?
Email
Maureen for a sample by reply email.
The HOA purchased "No Soliciting" decals for
our residents. The stickers are to be displayed on or near
your front door. Contact your Block Captain for a free
sticker to discourage unwanted solicitors. If you
don't know who your Block Captain is, email
watchgroup@stonelakes.net
Sidewalks and
Common Areas
If you take walks at night,
you may notice a streetlight that is not working
sometime.
Click Here to report broken streetlights online.
If you
prefer to report them by phone, call
1-888-313-4747
It is getting dark earlier in the day now, so
be sure to keep all sidewalks clear of bikes, skates, and so on.
Lots of folks take walks in the evening, so we don't want anyone
to be injured by tripping on an obstacle in the path. For
everyone's safety, please prune low branches on your trees if
they hang over the sidewalk. Also keep shrubs and hedges
trimmed back so they do not encroach on the walkways.
Please report any potential safety hazards that you encounter
on sidewalks or
in the common areas by emailing Sean Roberts:
grounds@stonelakes.net
